3 Character Designs - Older Russian Female Pyrotechnician [Final Result]

Rafina
Rafina is a survivor of the Moscow apartment bombings prior to the Second Chechen War.  However, her only daughter, Nadya, was not as fortunate.  At the age of 23, Nadya was ready to live independently.  After Nadya announced her decision, her mother insisted that she should remain in the apartment until her job stabilized.  Nadya was reluctant, but eventually gave in to the good will and care of her mother.  As Rafina was returning from an outing with old friends on September 9, 1999, she watched her apartment building fall to the ground merely 3 miles away, taking Nadya with it.
That night, Rafina cursed herself for convincing Nadya to stay with her.  Guilt lingered heavily during the idle period before the apartment was rebuilt.  During reconstruction, a worker uncovered a photograph of Rafina and Nadya.  Recognizing Rafina as the owner of the apartment building, he saved the photograph to place on Rafina’s office new desk.  Many months after, Rafina returned to her newly finished apartment building to find a photograph of her and Nadya at a firework show, recalling to herself Nadya’s love for fireworks.
Both in tribute to her lost daughter’s interest and her ambition to replace the image of her collapsing apartment, Rafina created a fountain firework device modeled after a flash-bang grenade.  Every September 13th, the day of mourning for victims of the bombing, Rafina can be seen on the rooftop of her apartment building putting on a firework show of her very own.

3 Character Designs - Older Russian Female Pyrotechnician [Research Images]

This are the source images that I studied for a while to embed the image of "middle age Russian woman" into my head.  I will also be basing clothing design off of the fashion in these images.

The 3 styles I plan on doing are 1. My natural hand, 2. Supersize head, super mini body, and 3. Pixel art character (proportions still undecided).

3 Character Designs - Older Russian Female Pyrotechnician [Sketches]

I decided that I should work on this literally 1 step at a time.  I'm very new to character designing and this is also my first time drawing seriously with a tablet, so I feel like I'm going to be "behind" the rest of the class.

My next objective is to design her outfit, and then design her pyrotechnic props.  I believe that personality comes from the face, and outfit & props should match that personality.  So now that I have a personality established (with tweaks to come still), I can develop other parts.
